(Background) Our front page currently carries a bulletin link to an NCADC-supported campaign launched from within Yarl's Wood immigration removal centre by three lesbian women seeking asylum, Aderonke Apata, Alice Nji and Freda Nsumba. These three women, from Nigeria, Cameroon and Uganda respectively, are facing deportation back to their home countries in the very immediate future. They are also currently suffering homophobic abuse inside Yarl's Wood from co-detainees who are from their home countries. As many will be aware, this is not a coincidence since the countries in question are notorious for both social and state persecution of LGBT people. Any LGBT asylum seekers deported to these countries have a sadly very well-founded fear of awful persecution. For more background and for how to take action please see the NCADC campaign page. Update 04/09/12 Statement from Alice, who was facing deportation scheduled for Sat 1st September: Alice Nji, Still Here, Still Fighting - Personal Statement "On Friday the 31st August 2012, the officers were supposed to let me know during the day that I have to prepare my things for the escort coming at 1.30am Saturday morning to take me to the airport, none of the officers told me anything. It was around, 12:45 am Saturday morning that they came and told me that I just have 5 minutes to get ready to go to airport. I didn't refuse, I arranged my few things and we left. "Inside the van one of the escorts, a lady, she was telling me that my going back to Cameroon has no risks attached to it, that I will not have any problem on my arrival, when we got in to the plane I told one of the escorts that I would like to speak with the pilot. "They told me that I am not allowed to speak with the pilot, I started crying, shouting and screaming for almost 20 minutes, the plane was about to take off - that was when the pilot came and asked the escorts to take me out. While we were inside the van coming back to Yarl's wood, the escorts were telling me that next time it will not be a private plane it will be a charter plane because the UK government is bent that I should go back to Cameroon." Many thanks to everyone for all the support, Alice Nji from Yarl's Wood IRC --- Update courtesy of John O - http://no-deportations.org.uk/ |
