SUPPORTERS CALL FOR SOLIDARITY WITH HOMELESS CAMPERS AS THEY APPLY FOR SUSPENSION OF EVICTION SET FORFRIDAY MORNING
Application to suspend eviction to be heard tomorrow, Thursday, May 7th 2015 2pm
Level 4, Manchester Civil Justice Centre, Bridge Street West, Manchester M60 9DJ
Manchester's Homeless Camp residents and their supporters are asking people to show solidarity at a 2pm hearing in Manchester Civil Justice Centre tomorrow (May 7th) when District Judge Iyer will hear an application to suspend a planned eviction.
A warrant for eviction was served on people at the camp today – with the eviction due to take place at 7.30 am on Friday, May 8th. The basis for the application to suspend the eviction is that, if the order for possession is enforced on 8th May, it will be before the scheduled appeal date on Thursday, May 14th, and would make that appeal redundant.
The Homeless Camp was set up on April 15th following a demonstration against homelessness in the city. Around 30 people have been living in the Camp, first in Albert Square and now round the corner in St Peter's Square, to raise awareness about the unfairness of Manchester City Council's homeless assessment policy.
Residents of the Homeless Camp have also called for a Solidarity Protest in St Peter's Square this Saturday, May 9th, at 2pm. They are asking supporters to come to the Square with their families and friends and to bring banners and placards.
